In May 1940, Ramsgate played a major part in an Allied success story during World War II.
A flotilla of more than 700 “Little Ships” departed Ramsgate Harbour, the same harbour you can see from your apartment, for Dunkirk. Their aim was to rescue Allied troops. Made up of fishing boats, lifeboats and pleasure boats the Little Ships managed to bring more than 330,000 men back to Britain, with some craft making several treacherous crossings.
On the back of this operation, the term “Dunkirk Spirit” was coined to describe the never-say-die attitude of the British.
