Ramsgate offers a wealth of watersports. From scuba diving to windsurfing, from fishing trips to kite surfing, there’s something for all.
As all our properties are on Ramsgate’s seafront, many of these activities are just a stone’s throw away. Whatever watersport you want to try out, you’re in the right place to make a splash on your holiday.
A SWELL TIME
Big waves and sensational surfing will greet you at Joss Bay, one of the most popular surf spots in the South East.
As well as renting out kit, Joss Bay Surf Club provides lessons for all ages and ability levels. You can learn in a private lesson or join in with a group and tackle the breakers together.
The Joss Bay Surf Club has signed up to the Surf Hire Safety Scheme. This means equipment is regularly checked for damage, safety information will be provided and you can be assured of using equipment suited to your skill level. A swell afternoon lies in wait…
Not far from Joss Bay you’ll find Kent Surf School. You can learn to surf here too in Broadstairs’ sheltered, and safe, Viking Bay. Kent Surf School also hire out bodyboards, paddleboards, surf skis and kayaks if you want to enjoy some different activities.
With around 16 beaches and bays in the area, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to windsurfing. Popular choices are Botany Bay, Viking Bay, Ramsgate Main Sands and Minnis Bay.
The waters of Minnis Bay teem with windsurfers, and you’ll find the Minnis Bay Windsurfing Club here. If you’re new to the sport they’ll get you started and give you a beginner’s board to try out on.
A NEW CRAZE – KITESURFING
A brightly-coloured kite flitting over the sea is a familiar site in Ramsgate. The reason? Kite surfing, an exhilarating new sport.
Discover this new activity with lessons from Ride Kitesurfing School. They’ll use their local knowledge to find out the best location for kitesurfing on any given day, whether it’s Minnis Bay, Pegwell Bay or Ramsgate Main Sands.
Lessons cost £30 per hour, but if you really want to master the sport you could take a two-day course for £200.
Kent Scuba, based in Margate, offers PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) courses. On completion of the course you’ll receive a PADI scuba certification card, allowing you to dive worldwide. You could also take a wreck diving, night diving and underwater-photography course here.
If you’re more at home on top of the water then explore the offshore with a boat trip. In Ramsgate Marina you’ll see “Micky Dee Bee”, the beloved inflatable craft belonging to Horizon Sea Safaris.
She’ll take you to see the seals of Goodwin Sands, tour the bays and beaches of Ramsgate – pointing out where the Thanet’s notorious smugglers kept their contraband – and even visit the Thanet Windfarm, the largest offshore windfarm in the world on its completion.
Micky Dee Bee can also be chartered for fishing trips – skate, bass and dogfish all make a fine supper. At the end of all this, if you need to get home in a hurry, rest assured that the boat can zip along at an exhilarating 55mph.
